Our Practice

Based in the centre of Campbeltown on the beautiful Kintyre peninsula, Westwards Veterinary Practice provides friendly, professional veterinary care for both companion and farm animals throughout Kintyre.

We are a RCVS accredited tier 2 practice for both companion and large animals.  This means that we have to undergo regular inspections to ensure that we are reaching high standards in areas such as patient care, diagnostic facilities, health and safety, staff training and client communications.

Donald Armour BVMS MRCVS

Donald graduated from Glasgow Vet School in 1987. Once qualified, Donald spent a year working in the South Lake District, before returning to Campbeltown. Donald became a partner in the business in 1993.

Whilst at university, Donald was awarded the Ben Brazil Prize for the final year student with best practical ability. He has also completed a diploma in Dutch cattle foot trimming.

Donald is married, with two grown-up sons and when he isn’t busy working at home on the family farm, he enjoys a round of golf at one of Kintyre’s well known courses.

Ruth Smith BVM & S MRCVS

Ruth is an Edinburgh graduate, and came to Campbeltown in 1991 where she has lived and worked ever since. Ruth became a partner at Westwards in 2009.

Ruth enjoys all aspects of mixed practice, especially small animal surgery and has a particular interest in orthopaedics. On the large animal side, Ruth says her favourite part of the job is getting out and about to visit the friendly Kintyre farmers!

When not at work, Ruth is kept very busy at home on the farm, assisting her husband and looking after two teenage daughters!

Surgical Facilities

Our dedicated operating theatre is well equipped with facilities to carry out a range of surgical procedures from routine neutering, to complicated soft tissue and orthopaedic surgery. We are equipped with a gas anaesthetic machine enabling us to provide general anaesthesia which can be carefully monitored and adjusted to each patient’s requirements throughout surgery.

We also benefit from having an electronic dental scaler, polisher and drill which allows us to offer comprehensive dental care for all of our patients.

Laboratory

The practice has a well equipped in-house laboratory. We are able to process basic blood results, analyse urine and fluid samples, and carry out cytology for rapid results.

When a more detailed sample analysis is required, we work with external laboratories, allowing us to provide the best possible care for our patients.
