MEET THE TEAM

AMANDA ELDERFIELD

I am passionate about delivering a professional Pet Service to Didcot and surrounding villages.  I had a professional background in the past and understand the importance of ‘reliability’ it is key to running our business.  Your pets in our care receive a service which is second to none and of course so do the owners!

I have been around horses and dogs all my life, owning quite a few of both along the way!  My interest in Gun Dogs / Training came about 12 years ago when I re-homed a head strong Rytex working Springer Spaniel (Poppy) from Ireland.  I was helped by Alex Thorneycroft-Taylor a renowned Gun Dog Trainer and so Poppy and I became hooked and equally we were both trained at the same time!

In September 2019 I had the pleasure in being asked along with Samantha Thorneycroft- Taylor to judge the Retriever Gundog Tests at Bowood County House by West Country Gundog Tests

What I have learnt I can now pass on which gives me great pleasure helping clients with their dogs whether it be Gun dog training or just family pets that need some fine tuning on re-call and heel work.

TONY ELDERFIELD

Tony joined SOPS in 2014 but really he has been on board from the beginning helping me!  Tony has also been around horses and dogs most of his life and rode and competed for Royal Air Force Benson back in the 90’s.

Tony has a real love for Spaniels and likes nothing better than spending a day out with the family dogs, he also works Sprite, the pocket Rocket we call him! and Copper our fox red Labrador.  Sully (son of Copper) is a new addition and in training to come along and into the working group in the future.

TONY PINK

Tony Pink, is my dad!  Now retired from the family business I am lucky enough for him to help me; he enjoys being out walking with the dogs and has learnt a great amount over the past years from being a rookie recruit to an experienced dog walker!

Sprite
Sully & Copper

Sprite, Sully & Copper

Our family dogs, Sprite our fantastic and cheeky spaniel, the matriarch who keeps Copper our stunning fox red Labrador and his son Sully in line, they love having doggie guests and they keep them entertained and settled within our home.

DOG WALKING

We Exercise Their Minds & Bodies

All of our dogs are walked in safe open countryside and generally off the lead, but if requested we will keep them on the lead giving them freedom to stretch their legs on a long line or Flexi lead. We are experienced dog handlers and understand dogs behaviour and can notice subtle changes in them, this enables us to walk groups of dogs safely in a structured way without any troubles.  Being pack animals we try to walk them in small groups, as they love to socialise and play together, even if this is something they are not been use to before.  Great care is taken to ensure the dogs all get along and the personalities are well matched.  We teach recall to the whistle, interacting with the dogs during the walk by playing games, recall, jumping and sniffing for balls and treats.  In the hot summer weather some may have a cool off in water, and/or a walk in the shade, or a mooch along a hedgerow or just pootle along quietly by our side.

Dogs are transported securely in our vehicles in custom made crash tested/safety escape hatches/lockable compartments.  All vehicles have first aid kits in them, washers for muddy dogs, treats and biodegradable poo bags.  If it is a wet day we will always towel off before returning home!

We get great pleasure from seeing your dog looking relaxed, happy and contented when delivered back to your home.  If you want us to put out food and fresh water (we check their water bowls regardless) for them before we leave, just ask, we’re here to help.

Please contact us to discuss your requirements.

Many people worry about putting their dogs in kennels as some dogs find the experience extremely stressful, Home Boarding is a popular alternative!

Your dog will live in our home with our dogs, as part of our family.  We can cater for any size dog and specialise in Home Boarding for Gun Dogs.  We will endeavour to maintain your dogs routines as much as possible so they feel happy and contented.

Prior to boarding with us we arrange a free “Meet & Greet” for our dogs to meet yours, these visits are at no charge.  It is important to establish that your dog and our family home is the correct place for him or her to stay.

South Oxon Pet Services (SOPS) Home Boarding aim to give you peace of mind that your dog will have a great time, as will you, whilst away!  Dogs are walked twice daily and any of your usual routine can be fulfilled if you require.  Knowing that your dog is holidaying as well with a structured happy routine will make your holiday stress free not worrying about your pet.

CAT VISITS

Cats prefer to be cared for at home and generally do not like being moved about.  Staying in their own homes enables them to continue their normal habits and live without the added stress of an unfamiliar environment and curtailment of freedom.

We offer up to two visits a day maintaining their routines and caring for your cat as you would, cleaning litter trays at each visit, feeding, changing water, play and enrichment games, basic grooming,  fuss and cuddles! and  administering medication (if required).

We can also adjust curtains and lights, attend to your rubbish and recycling and generally make your house look occupied whilst you are away.

Prices start from £10.00 per visit subject to location

PUPPY CARE

Puppy visits at home until fully vaccinated working on recall, play, feeding and cleaning up any accidents.  Then when they are allowed out we take them out within our group walk carrying in my bag to help with socialisation by taking them for short walks with older calm dogs helps with their confidence, off lead and recall from a young age.

Prices from £15

SMALL PET CARE

We can look after your Cats, Rabbits, Mice, Chickens, Birds, Guinea pigs,  fish or reptiles while you are away.

Care includes:

  • Watering and feeding.
  • Hutch and litter trays cleaned each visit.
  • Administering medication (if required).
  • Basic grooming.
  • Handling and cuddles if your pet likes attention.

Caring for small animals in their own environment seems to work best for them and less stressful than moving them, we usually recommend twice daily visits to enable us to keep a close eye on them.  Visiting your house as well as checking on your pets etc we will make sure everything is fine within your home, there is no extra cost for this it’s all part of the service we provide.

Prices from £10 depending on location

DOG TRAINING

HEEL MEANS HEEL

Are you fed up of being pulled around whilst walking your dog?  Is it making walking your dog stressful, not fun and dangerous for you both??  We can help train you with lead walking for your dog thus making it a more pleasurable and fun experience.

Getting it right with your choice of puppy and breeder

It is very exciting but also a little nerve racking choosing a new puppy, before it joins you in your home.  We can help with what to look for when you go to view a puppy, the right questions to ask and correct paperwork you need to see.  Advice and support getting ready for your new family member, advice for the first night and days going forward, toilet training, to exploring the big wide world, socialization, off lead and basic training.

Gundog Training & General Obedience Training

Amanda Is passionate about being able to help individuals who own a gundog breed that lives at home as a pet, but have no intention of ever taking them out to working them on a shoot/beating.

Gundog breeds make fabulous family pets and our training is designed to provide you with the knowledge of how to raise and train them to fit into the active life that you live in your home and out walking.

Gundog training is perfect for the pet gundog and designed to enhance your relationship by using games and exercises which stimulate and fulfil their natural hunting ability/instincts without the need to actually take them on a shoot.  Amanda will give you all the knowledge she has to learn about what makes your gundog tick and how to get the best out of them so that they can live happy and fulfilled lives.

Mastering basic obedience commands is a vital part of being a responsible dog owner.  These basic commands make navigating the relationship between dog and owner much easier and keep both you and your pet safe in emergency situations.

From an outsider’s perspective, basic training can look either very simple or extremely difficult.  It’s important to appreciate that training will take a lot of work but also understand any dog can learn at least the most basic and necessary commands.  Dog owners occasionally run into challenges when training, so don’t become frustrated.  Asking assistance from a professional trainer benefits first-time owners or individuals struggling with teaching commands or correcting problem behaviors.  Don’t ever hesitate to ask for help!

Amanda offers a bespoke training service working with you and your dog to achieve results, from lead walking, basic obedience, pet or working gundog, please contact us to discuss your requirements.
