What is an Animal Behaviour Counsellor?

An Animal Behaviour Counsellor differs from a dog trainer in that they not only have practical experience in training and teaching dogs, but they also have post-graduate level academic experience of the ethology, psychology, neurophysiology, pharmacology, legal and welfare issues associated with a wide range of companion animal species and essential for assisting owners in treating their pet’s behaviour problems.

About Me

Catherine Sutton BSc (Hons) PG Dip CABC DTLLS

My name is Catherine Sutton and I run Pets Behaving Badly, based in Farnborough and covering the surrounding areas. I hold a Second Class Honours (2:1) degree in the field of Zoology, from Royal Holloway, University of London and a Post Graduate Diploma in Companion Animal Behavioural Counselling from the University of Southampton, an internationally recognised centre of excellence for animal behaviour studies.

I am currently a Provisional Member of the Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors (APBC). Provisional Members have demonstrated that they have the appropriate level of Knowledge and Understanding for the professional role of Clinical Animal Behaviourist (CAB). They are now gaining the practical experience necessary to be assessed as a CAB and therefore become a Full Member of the APBC. The APBC supports its Provisional Members undertaking behaviour consultations.

Although there is no official governing body for the field of professional behaviourists, the APBC represents a network of those that work to the highest practical and academic standards. Attending regular workshops and seminars with some of the world’s most renowned trainers and behaviourists ensures that I am always improving and updating my current methods.

The only letters I place after my name are those of my university qualifications. Be wary of unqualified behaviourists that attempt to use their membership to an organisation as if it is a qualification. Other self-proclaimed “behaviour experts” will cite the completion of a poor-quality behaviour course as evidence of their qualifications.
