Al Rankin BSc (Hons) CDBC Canine Behaviour & Training

Our consultant is an expert in canine behaviour and development.  He graduated with first class honours in Canine Behaviour and Training from the University of Hull, and with over 20 years of experience of coaching and training adults, he knows how to get the very best from you and your dog.

He is a Certified Dog Behaviour Consultant with the International Association of Animal Behaviour Consultants, a proud member of the Pet Professional Guild and is a Registered Accredited Animal Behaviourist with the Animal Behaviour & Training Council.  He regularly attends training and behaviour symposiums with some of the world’s leading animal scientists and trainers.

As well as teaching you and your dog important skills, he will also explain how dogs learn so that you can apply these principles to real life situations.  Developing an understanding of what motivates your dog’s behaviour will help you to live in harmony with your best friend.  Call today to see how we can help you!

Dog A.I.D

Assistance in Disabilty

I am a registered instructor with Dog A.I.D. (Assistance in Disability).

Dog A.I.D. is a registered charity that helps people with physical disabilities train their own dogs. The training consists of a three tiered system.

Level One, Companion Level, is basic obedience and some useful task training. For some people this is all they require.

Level Two, is the Advanced Companion Level, and for dogs with all round sociability; this is where dogs acquire further skills and continue the training in the useful tasks that are of help to their owner.

At Level Three, Assistance Dog Level, owners and their dogs go out into public places and practise putting these skills into operation. At the end of each level owners & their dogs are assessed and awarded a certificate issued from the office to show their achievements.

All training with Dog A.I.D. is free; however, we do ask for a donation equal to or towards the cost of the trainers’ travelling expenses and in some cases the hire of a venue. The agreement for this financial commitment is made prior to the commencement of training and payments are made to the Treasurer so that it goes through the accounts as required by charity law.

If you are physically disabled and would like an informal discussion about your dog’s suitability and the criteria for becoming a Dog A.I.D. client please call me on 07989387407.

For an application form for Dog A.I.D. please contact Dog A.I.D. Earlyworld House, 7 Darwin Court, Oxon Business Park, Welshpool Road, Shrewsbury, SY3 SAL. Phone number 01743588469.

If you don’t have a dog but would like to train your own assistance dog, I may be able to help you find a dog or puppy to train under the Dog A.I.D. scheme. Please get in touch if this idea appeals to you.

121 Dog Training

“Individual training for you and your dog at a time that suits – fun, convenient and effective training for busy pet owners.”

DOG TRAINING

THE WAY YOU WANT IT

Why choose individual training?

We will arrange a time that suits you and deliver a bespoke service that meets your needs; it can be a lot more convenient for us to visit you in your own home.  You will receive undivided attention from your trainer for the duration of the session unlike any classroom environment.  There are fewer distractions for your dog during the early stages of training resulting in less stress, better concentration and quicker understanding.

Some dogs are not suited to a classroom environment due to the proximity of other people or dogs.  For these dogs, starting at home 121 where they are relaxed should always be the first stage.

We will show you how to become the most important thing in your dog’s life as well as teaching you how to build the focus and attention required to be successful in your training.

Start right – Learn about your puppy!

Setting your puppy up for success starts with learning all about their development.

Our new puppy sessions are designed to help you avoid common problems and are ideal for new or inexperienced owners.

NEW PUPPY SESSIONS

At My Dogs Best Friend we understand that getting a new puppy can be a daunting experience for many first-time pet owners.  That is why we designed our new puppy session.  This theory based session aims to provide you with the knowledge and understanding you will need to help avoid common problems that many new puppy owners can face.

Similarly, pet owners taking on adult dogs for the first time would also benefit from our new dog session.  We fully support rehoming from the many rescue centres and charities here in Northern Ireland and are able to offer a discount.

When training is fun for you and your dog, it is much more effective.

In conjunction with an appropriate exercise routine, training your dog will provide much needed mental stimulation and result in an extremely tired and content dog.  What’s the benefit? Relaxed and content dogs are usually much better behaved!

Our training and behaviour modification methods are based on extensive research and knowledge of how dogs learn; we never employ any unpleasant or aversive techniques.
