Thank you for visiting It’s A Dog’s Life. I’m Penny, a dog behaviour specialist, and like many of us, have been around dogs all my life and simply couldn’t envisage life without them.
When I began dog training in the Eighties, it was a world of harsh training methods, choke chains and Barbara Woodhouse ruled the roost.
Thankfully today good dog trainers and behaviourists (including me!) use modern, kind methods, based on positive reinforcement not punishment. Resulting in a fantastic relationship with your best friend based on trust and mutual respect; not fear.
I cover Chelmsford, Witham, Billericay, Brentwood, and surrounding areas in Essex.
Using a holistic approach that factors in all aspects of your dog’s life, health and diet, I provide one to one bespoke coaching, tailored to meet the needs of you, your family and dog. I use clicker training – a quick, fun and extremely effective training method.
Puppy training
Did you know that like children, puppies have a period during their brain development when they are most impressionable? This critical learning period (also known as imprinting) is five years in children but for puppies it’s a mere first 16 weeks of their life. In these four short months your puppy can learn more than they will in the rest of their lives. Literally every day counts and puppy training should start from the day you bring your new family member home.

Whilst classes have a role to play, for example with socialisation skills, the environment can make some pups anxious and overexcited. Also it’s likely that dogs will be at different levels of obedience, and of course, being in a group there is little time for the instructor to concentrate on individual dogs.
I firmly believe you will find it far, far easier to train your pup, with one to one bespoke coaching tailored to the needs of you, your family and your pup in their home environment.
Furthermore consistency when puppy training is essential, so all members of your family should behave in the same way towards your pup and employ the same training methods both in and outside the house.
This can’t happen in a group environment and space limitations mean that due to the size of halls many classes have to restrict the number of humans accompanying your pup.

Once you’ve found your puppy I can help you prepare your home and advise on the equipment you might need such as crates, play pens and stimulating toys. Plus, I can advise on vet pet plans and vaccinations, including Lepto 4. We can also discuss the benefits of crate training, whether puppy pads are necessary and how much exercise your puppy will need. And I can help with the most important decision you’ll ever make on behalf of your new family member – what to feed him or her! A puppy’s critical socialisation period is the first 12 weeks of their life. They need to be introduced to adult dogs asap so they learn that they cannot play with adults in the same way as they did with their litter mates. And yes puppies can mix with adults before their second vaccination as you can ask family, friends, neighbours etc whose dog’s will of course be vaccinated.

I’m Penny owner of It’s a Dog’s Life. I provide one to one dog training in your own home and offer bespoke solutions for owners to help with issues such as:

what to expect from one2one dog training
My training sessions take place in your home where I can assess what is happening first hand, where most behaviour problems take place. I encourage as many members of your family/household as possible to join the session. You can explain what problems you are experiencing with your dog or puppy and what you’d like to achieve from the training. Additionally we will look at nutrition, exercise and all aspects of your relationship with your canine family member.
Importantly, I will be able to observe your pet’s behaviour and the interaction between you both, as well as other members of your family.
I’ll give on the spot guidance and tuition to enable you to correct your dog’s unwanted behaviour and can also help you with all basic obedience requirements, including recall, loose lead walking and basic commands such as sit, stay, leave etc.
obedience and agility training
As part of my follow up service I also provide an optional extra one to one obedience and agility training sessions, based in Oaklands Park in Chelmsford.
Please note these sessions are only available for clients who have already had a one to one at home.
These sessions are really popular and spaces are limited so please get in contact for more information.
