Bishops Stortford
Veterinary Hospital

If you have developed Covid 19 within the last 5 days, please let our staff know before visiting the practice.

Our practice has been in operation for over 140 years at Rye Street in Bishop’s Stortford, Herts. 25 years ago we achieved Hospital status and remain the only one in a 10 mile radius. We aim to achieve the highest possible standards in patient and client care and continually invest in the latest equipment and staff training.

Please feel free to call us and discuss your needs with our friendly reception team, no question is too small!

About Us

Our site has been in continuous use as a Veterinary Surgery since Mr Brunskill MRCVS qualified in 1878 and moved to Bishops Stortford.

The veterinary work in those days was mainly farm animals and horses, with the odd farm dog and a rare cat.

The famous racehorse ‘Golden Miller’ was treated here, and Sir Frederick Hobday FRCVS used to visit here to perform his now universal Hobday procedure for horses with laryngeal paralysis.

Many years, and several generations of vets later and the practice is still going strong.

We now concentrate solely on companion animals and since 1985, have held the accolade of “Hospital” status, the highest standard awarded to general practice veterinary clinics in the UK.

Today our head vets , Alison Somers , Ruth Jackson, and Neil Macleod, continue to push the practice to ever higher levels of clinical excellence and customer service.

We invest heavily in the latest equipment so our vets can offer you the modern 21st century veterinary treatment your pet deserves.

After nearly 150 years, the practice still provides the individual personalised care that we believe is best delivered by a clinic that remains independently owned.

Fees and payment

Regardless of the high level of service we offer, we remain competitively priced. We do ask that you settle your bill at the time of treatment, regardless of insurance status. Please don’t hesitate to ask your vet beforehand for estimates of work to be done. We accept cheques and all major credit cards excluding Diners Club and American Express.

Hydrotherapy

What is hydrotherapy?

Hydrotherapy is derived from the Greek word meaning water healing. It is controlled aquatic exercise in heated sanitized water. A combination of warmth, buoyancy and hydrostatic pressure reduces pain and swelling, promotes muscle relaxation and improves circulation and healing.

The warmth of the water will relax the muscles. A decrease in range of motion can often be due to pain, swelling and/or stiffness which can be reduced by the warm water. Hydrostatic pressure (the pressure of the water on the animal) can also reduce swelling and therefore possibly increase the range or motion. The buoyancy of the water decreases the weight bearing on the limbs. The buoyancy of the water will help move the stiff joint with further range of movement with minimal exercise.

This helps to reduce pain and can allow easier movement with minimal exercise.
